Congratulations on getting your experiment approved and scheduled at the 88-Inch Cyclotron. This section details how to register with LBNL, acquire gate access and parking, and take the required safety courses to run an experiment at the 88-Inch Cyclotron.
6 Weeks Ahead
Set up a user agreement between your organization and LBNL, if there is not already one in place. Recharge customers (those who pay for beam time) must have a user agreement, purchase order, and an advance payment check in place before beam can be delivered. For other users, a user agreement should be in place between your organization and LBNL. For more information, please contact our Research Coordinator, Mike Johnson, via email at MBJohnson@lbl.gov or by phone at (510) 486-4389.
If you wish to stay onsite during your experiment, you can make reservations for the Berkeley Lab Guest House here. It is a 10-minute walk from the Cyclotron, very affordable, and offers 57 tastefully appointed rooms with spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and skyline.
3 Weeks Ahead
Register with our Admin Office 3 weeks before coming to the Cyclotron. All new users and guests, both U.S. and Non-U.S. citizens, must begin the required registration process by completing the Affiliate Registration Form (ARF Form). Other forms will need to be signed on arrival, or you can complete them ahead of time and bring them with you. The forms are available from our Admin Office or online here.
New users and guests who are not U.S. citizens must provide additional documentation. Please refer here for more information.
Prior to Departing Your Home Institution
Carefully review registration procedures to ensure that all necessary documents have been forwarded to the Admin Office, and make sure that any additional documents that you may need are in your possession.
The Admin Office is open weekdays from 9am to 5:30pm to process new users. Please notify the Admin Office as soon as you are aware of the date and time of your arrival and departure so that all required documents and training will be ready for you.
The Admin Office will arrange for a Laboratory Gate Pass and Parking in the Cyclotron lot (if needed) when notified in advance of arrival. Please enter Laboratory premises via the Blackberry Gate entrance on Cyclotron Road. Gate security can provide directions to the Cyclotron. Parking permits are required at LBNL. Signs in each parking lot designate the type of permit required for that area. Please be aware that cars parked in "No Parking" areas or reserved spaces without appropriate permits may be cited, fined, and/or towed.
After completion of the registration process and safety training, new users and guests will be directed to the LBNL Site Access Office (Building 65) to obtain a key card/identification badge that provides access to the Cyclotron. Please be prepared to present a picture ID to Site Access staff.
After Hours Arrival: If you absolutely cannot arrive during normal working hours, you must alert the Admin Office beforehand. You will be given safety training by the Control Room Operator on duty. You must complete all of the required forms and complete the 88-Inch Cyclotron building training BEFORE beginning work of any kind. The forms (available on our User Forms page) can be completed prior to coming to the Cyclotron. You may submit any completed forms via email to email@example.com. New users and guests will need to return to the Admin Office the next working day to complete the registration process and obtain access to the Cyclotron for the duration of your research or visit.
For the current 88-Inch Cyclotron training requirements, please see the "Training" tab in the menu bar on the left side of the screen.
Dosimeters are automatically issued if you will be handling radioactive material or entering radiation areas. They are also available upon request. You may obtain a dosimeter at the Admin Office. Please do not wear your dosimeter outside of the facility. You must contact the Admin Office immediately if you lose, damage, or fail to return your dosimeter.
